Student Transition

“What to Expect at Uni” Program

Workshops, talks and online resources for secondary schools and individuals to accurately inform them about the reality they will encounter at university.

University is a very different learning environment to secondary school. Many students experience anxiety and doubt, eroding their self-belief. University students are considered a very high risk cohort for mental health issues.

There is a gap between how schools prepare students for university, the recruiting information universities provide schools, and the reality students find. Our ‘What to Expect at Uni’ resources are created to bridge that gap. They are not aligned with any particular university, allowing honest and accurate representation of what students can expect. They are designed to pre-equip students to successfully navigate the transition from high school to university and maintain their self-belief and confidence throughout this important stage in their lives – so that they can thrive through their emerging adulthood as university students.

Make an informed transition from high school to uni. Learn to:

  • manage expectations of university
  • understand what the university expects
  • navigate the system
  • interact positively with diverse students and staff
  • maintain wellbeing and thrive personally
  • understand independent learning in the academic world

and more…

Academic Skills

Talking about Higher Education in English

Bringing people together as non-native speakers of English to engage with higher education topics.

Reaching a high standard of English language ability within a university environment is hard work. Don’t let you language skills slip away! Maintain and improve your English language skills while communicating about higher education topics.

Academic staff and graduate students welcome!

Join our online workshops for the opportunity to talk with others like you who want to develop and improve their ability to communicate in English as a global academic language. In an informal, open and friendly environment, we will share our ideas and experiences in higher education, and get to know one another – building respect and understanding along the way.

In each session, we will discuss one academic-themed topic and look at related vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar structures. Topics relate to higher education such as: scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL); student retention; university access and equity; university systems; research and teaching roles, benefits of higher education and so on. There will also be time you to bring your own topics to talk about.

‘Talking about Higher Education in English’ is an ongoing five week series of workshops. Please see our Upcoming & Recent page for the times and dates of the next available events and registration links.

Sessions run for 75 minutes and are held online.

Cost for 5 weeks – $250.
