November 2024

– Conference presentation, Tokyo, Japan

Co-teaching in higher education: Making it work in intercultural teaching teams. With Dr Barbara Bynder (Karrda & University of Notre Dame, Australia). Presentation at IAFOR Asian Conference on Education held in Tokyo, Japan, November 25-29 2024

In this presentation, we reflected on and shared our key insights into what worked for us in intercultural co-teaching. Although many benefits of co-teaching are noted for both students and staff, too often it is assumed that the teaching relationship will form naturally, with little training or guidance provided. We addressed this gap by explaining how we could develop a relationship of trust from within our different cultural backgrounds and experiences. This relationship allowed us to react and respond to each other, and the students, with consideration and care in the dynamic environment of the classroom.

– Guest Lecture at Tamagawa University, Japan

Enhancing DEI in Higher Education through Indigenous Knowledges in the Curriculum. With Dr Barbara Bynder (Karrda & University of Notre Dame, Australia). Academic development lecture delivered at Tamagawa University, Japan, November 26 2024

This 2 hour lecture and discussion drew on the key points from our workshop at University of Tokyo. We focused on why and how Australian universities have prioritised the inclusion of Indigenous Knowledges for staff and students, and placed this in the global context. We drew on Indigenous academic theories and our own experiences to offer guidance on what can work to enhance DEI in higher education.

– Workshop conducted at the University of Tokyo, Japan

Enhancing Diversity Equity & Inclusion in Higher Education through Indigenous Knowledges in the Curriculum. With Dr Barbara Bynder (Karrda & University of Notre Dame, Australia). Academic development workshop conducted at the University of Tokyo, Japan, November 22 2024

This 3 hour workshop included an overview of the journey within Australian higher education towards recognising the need to deeply incorporate Indigenous Knowledges in curriculum, in historical, societal, professional, and personal contexts related to the Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian experience. We looked at look at the relevance and value of a focus on Indigenous Knowledges in higher education systems globally, and offered practical guidance on incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing within diverse disciplines and learning and teaching activities in the university classroom.

October 2024

– Conference presentation, Indiana, USA

Moving forward with SaP in Australia and Japan. With Dr Fumiko Inoue (Waseda University, Japan). Presentation at the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Annual Conference held in Indiana, USA October 28-31 2024

Students as Partners (SaP) emphasizes equal partnerships between students and staff involving reciprocal learning and mutual trust, and shows much promise for enhancing students’ agentic engagement in their own studies. This presentation outlined the teaching and learning contexts in Japan and Australia and the potential place of SaP in both and presented our initial findings regarding students’ own perceptions of the value of SaP to their university experience.

November 2023

– Workshop conducted at the University of Tokyo, Japan

Innovative Curriculum Design through Object-Based Learning. With Dr Olivia Meehan (University of Melbourne, Australia). Academic development workshop conducted at the University of Tokyo, Japan, November 24 2023

This workshop focused on Object-based learning (OBL), which is an active learning model that connects skills such as communication and teamwork with abstract and creative thinking. We explored our experiences of working with this pedagogy highlighting ways to promote an atmosphere in which students are encouraged to engage with objects and works of art across all disciplines and included practical exercises in observation and visual thinking strategies for the higher education classroom.

– Conference presentation, Melbourne, Australia

Significant Transformations in Higher Education: Critical Reflections from an Indigenous/non-Indigenous co-tutoring team. With Dr Barbara Bynder (Karrda & University of Notre Dame, Australia). Presentation at ‘A Profound Reorganising of Things’ International Conference held at the University of Melbourne, Australia November 13-15 2023

This paper presentation was based on the co-presenters’ experiences of teaching a first-year undergraduate intercultural communications subject together over six years. We linked our teaching experiences with the university policies and structures in which they were located, and examined how these policies constrain the ability of university staff to treat each other with respect and to accept mutual responsibility for each other. This constraint has consequences regarding the extent to which students’ in-class experiences can be genuinely transformative and empowering for their futures. We proposed the need to take the transformation of higher education further by embracing practices of relating and interacting founded on Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing.
